Endocrine Disruptors In Drinking Water
Evidence is growing that a serious health link
exists between chemicals that mimic the hormone estrogen and damage
to the human reproductive system. Known as Endocrine Disruptors,
these chemicals are widely distributed in the environment.
To understand how endocrine disruptors function
let's first take a look at the endocrine system itself. The endocrine
system is a complex set of bodily organs and tissues whose actions
are coordinated by chemical messengers called hormones. These hormones
control reproduction, growth, development and behavior. If these
chemical "messages" are disrupted by chemicals that mimic
the hormones, then the systems receiving the messages are going
to be damaged. The range of problems that may be caused by hormone
disruption is large: cancer, birth defects, stunted growth, reproductive
failure, diminished sperm count, endometriosis, tubal pregnancy,
damage to the immune system, loss of muscle tone, weakened reflexes,
impairment of short-term memory, decreased ability to pay attention,
lower I.Q. and violent behavior.
Endocrine disruptors can get into water supplies
in various ways. Since many endocrine disruptors are herbicides
and pesticides, agricultural runoff can carry these chemicals into
water supplies. Some are products of industrialization and may get
into water supplies through various means, such as leaking storage
tanks, accidental spills or illegal dumping.
With no visible characteristics, smell or taste,
endocrine disruptors are virtually undetectable in drinking water.
According to a study cited in Science (March, 1997) magazine, when
certain endocrine disruptors are combined in drinking water, they
become hundreds of times more potent. How likely is it to come across
multiple chemicals in drinking water? The Environmental
Working Group in their report, “Weed
Killers By The Glass,” has noted that people are “routinely
exposed to many different pesticides in a single glass of water.”
Some of the studies on endocrine disruptors have shown:
- Male reproductive health has declined drastically over five
decades.
- Serious damage to human reproductive systems including infertility,
birth defects and several kinds of cancer including a link to
breast cancer in women exposed to those chemicals.
- Exposure to mixes of chemicals routinely found in the environment
could be posing a much greater risk than suspected.
Included in the list of 52 Endocrine Disruptors
are organo-chlorine pesticides such as PCB's, Dioxin, Heptachlor
and Chlordane.
The only reliable filtering technology that can
effectively remove Volatile Organic Chemicals, including Endocrine
Disruptors, from tap water is activated carbon.
In most cases, public utilities are using only
chlorination and sand filtration which does nothing to reduce endocrine
disruptor levels in the consumers' tap water.
